DJI Re-Enter FPV Drone Racing Market? Remember DJI Snail? What Challenges Await?

With three new DJI FCC filings just revealed, the market-leading drone manufacturer may be attempting to re-enter the FPV market, remember DJI Snail? (https://www.dji.com/snail?from=dap_unique&pbc=FwBaHO2T&pm=custom) – Let’s stick to facts and discuss the challenges that DJI might face in re-entering the current FPV market.

At this time, there is ABSOLUTELY NO evidence of an actual “DJI FPV drone/quad coming”, only these three FCC filings for a set of FPV connectivity accessories. Be sure to avoid/correct click-bait content spreading fake news about an actual aircraft, because right now they’re just guessing/speculating.

Just also to note, this video was filmed entirely with the DJI Osmo Pocket (https://store.dji.com/en/product/osmo-pocket?from=dap_product&pbc=FwBaHO2T&pm=link&as=0004).

  1. DJI should stick to what they are good at; CAMERA Drones. Maybe a Spark 2.0 or the long awaited Phantom 5, or a cross between a Spark and a Mavic Air a “Spavic” if you will.

  2. dji have only applied patents for the fpv system (transmit and receive), not the drone system, they seem to be aiming more towards the creators as of late, wouldn't be surprised if they weren't aiming to fix analogue fpv, who else in the field would be better? if they manage to fix video quality and range (doesnt have to be hd quality, just better) they managed something similar in the inspire 2 with the low latency fpv cam for the pilot, its 720 (from memory, may be wrong).

  3. If ever DJI releases racing drones it would open up a whole new market for the newbies and I can just imagine the mess that could get(actually I don’t want to imagine). FAA would have this hobby for breakfast and it could turn sour for us and yes even the guys like us in our 40’s. Great informative video Ash.

  4. Hey Ash, welcome back for your holiday, I sure hope you guys had a wonderful time. Excellent overview and your take on the new FCC ID wireless applications. Yes, three application forms, one for goggles, one for the air unit and the last for the remote controller. This will be very interesting, DJI coming out with an FVP drone (possibly a racing drone?) when 75% of the FPV drones on the market today are being built, repaired and put together by the owner, not a company. I think DJI is testing the water since the major of their customers are retail sales, and I'm sure they, DJI, feel they are missing a big part of the FPV market. Well, only time will tell and really not too long since the DNR with the FCC is only for 45 days, tick-tock-tick-tock! Thanks!

  5. DJI seems to be entering the "copy what's popular" so perhaps we'll see DJI's version of small Fatshark goggles which work with the Mavic and also have diversity analog high res for FPV 5.8 ghz. This would be a great alternative to the rather ridiculously large box TRON headset they currently sell.

  6. Hi Ash.
DJI have partnered to produce the tello, so the idea of them getting into this isn't that far fetched. So maybe a tello in carbon fiber is coming?

  7. Sorry..forgot to mention:.IF DJI did enter the market, would this be to capture the new European regs that are proposed for 2020,e.g.FLAM ,GPS,with return to home, and a super ,slow maximum speed, for race/freestyle e.g.FPV kwads,…as the CAA has asked for MANUFACTURERS to start speaking to them DIRECTLY, in the creating of new laws for the industry in the UK ??????

  8. So sad but to each is his own. I much prefer making great pictures and video opposed to flying through tree, houses and other things. I don't blame DJI though, go where the money is.

  9. How would they top companies like Geprc,Armattan,Hglrc,Diatone,Emax, etc on quality and price?
Things move on in the race/freestyle world every week regarding better technology.
If DJI sold an FPV kwad, ittd be out of date, old hat, within 2 months.
I have built 6 drones from 5 inch to 7 inch in the last 13 months, amazing the speed China brings out new eg better FC,s motors, escapes, fpv cameras..and the fantastic value for money BNF,s under £250!
