Skydio 2 Autonomous Sports Drone: Holy cow!

The Skydio 2 is in theory the most advanced sports tracking drone on the market – surpassing the company’s first drone – the Skydio R1.

This new unit boasts 4K/60 HDR recording (that actually looks the part), 7 concurrent 4K cameras on it, as well as a 23 minute battery life. Atop all that there’s the new GPS-assisted Beacon for tracking in trees, a controller, and a smaller form factor.

But most important? Does it actually track well? And what are the gotchyas? For that I head out to test from road cycling to mountain biking to running, open fields to dense forests. Plus, even a crash or two. Dive on it!

  1. So funny to see you guys driving close to my home, along the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal and crossing that new bike-bridge. Must have been to see this kind of bike infrastructure for those from abroad. Looks like real good testing ground for the drone/

Just need to find out if it can fly patterns of aereas so I can use photoscan to create 3D mappings.

  2. The challenge is the licenses required in some countries, until these drones get below the 250g requirements with 4K 120 fps, along with the tracking that this drone has it will be a very limited market for now. Its not practical for the average youtube producer to buy these yet.

  3. Nice review. YouTube clickbait brought me here, but I'm glad it did! Your video is well laid-out, not boring, and answered all my questions about Skydio 2. I ordered mine in October, and have gotten one (1) email from Skydio saying that they are starting to ship (not mine, but someones!) It would be nice if they had a status page on where I was in the Queue, or even an email saying that mine was shipping in January or whenever. Not knowing is the worst!

  4. The 20x speed looks like some funny video game. Like your content btw. I was already putting together a budget for the Mavic 2 Pro or 3 Pro if that came out soon enough but I'm honestly sold on Skydio 2. Definitely getting one for myself.

  5. I usually prefer reading your reviews but this was quite informative I must say. Would love to see how it handles skiing with white obstacles (snow covered trees) on a white background. Guess not much chance to test that where you live. I mean, there are plenty of trees but kind of lack of snow and, surely, mountains.

  6. Great Vid!!??

    Couple quick questions:

Video quality – The “mechanical performance” of the drone is Absolutely Amazing! However, I am noticing some “soft” sections/artifacts in all of the footage I see from pretty much every source on YouTube. It reminds me of footage from an original Mavic Pro with the settings set for internal noise reduction, where the footage would lose detail and become “mushy” in places. Are these sections of “softness” and other NR/compression related looking artifacts present in the original raw files or is what I’m seeing just a result of YouTube’s “not so great” compression?

Is there any way you could post some downloadable raw/unedited/straight out of camera files/clips for people to check out?

I have a drone on order (Jan 2020 delivery) but would really like to see some uncompressed footage out of camera before making my final payment. If the video quality is just a little better than what I’m seeing online then this really is the perfect setup for my needs??‍♂️Thanks for the help!

  7. Great challenge review. Can you lament more on the video quality. For some reason all reviews are on everything but that. In several places when the drone is avoiding things, the footage seems to blur. Can you expand on the 4K 60fps aspect. I want to use this to shoot real estate, so I need high quality, sharp smooth footage and the ability to do smooth fly through, avoiding hitting things.

  8. Cleaverest thing I've seen for a long time, very impressed. What it needs to do though is record the GPS path you take, so if it gets stuck, it can then simply retrace your route to find you rather than just trying to take a direct route.
