6S FPV Drone Racing???

It’s time for the 2018 MultiGP Regional Series, and the debate has been rage. Should we allow 6S batteries? Or should they stay limited to 4S and lower? I build a racing quad optimized for high speed 6S racing and discuss my findings and discuss my viewpoint on the debate! Stay tuned, and let me know what you think!

  1. +1? Thakns for your video…. makes me think i bought too heavy 6S (black label 1100mAh 200g) 1900kv also,. flamed a motor on my maiden test hover. not sure what or why. (freestyler, not racer) possible 5.1pitch was my killjoy, or default pids my problem?

  2. Great video John. I also had my doubts about 6s as it initially appears to be just a change of values in an equation to reach the same answer… but when you consider that the torque increase can improve response/handling… then you can see it's merits.
However… IF… they were able to introduce torque boost to work as welllike in the silverware fw I think that 6s advantage could disappear instantly… in fact, I reckon they will probably end up having to move towards that idea to improve reliability.
To reduce the risk of FC damage you might want to build yourself a spark suppressor and connect it only while plugging in each fresh 6s Lipo.
    Thanks for your insights!

  3. This is all old technology it's what we've been doing with 3D helicopters for a long time now we used to fly T-REX 450 helicopters with 4S and we eventually went to lower KV and 6s and another thing since you're running a cap if you are running a cap you need a low charge resistor that connect from the battery to the main plug you want to connect that first before you connect the battery that way it charges the cap and brings on the voltage slowly and then you plug in the battery basically it's called a spark arrestor and that's what the main cause of failure with 6s systems I was just sponsored pilot for 8 years for Mikado helicopters and Horizon Hobby back in the day before I got into mini quads when I see these high KV Motors and 6s especially the freestylers which can't even fly 4s to their full potential it just makes me cringe when it comes to the freestyle Pilots doing it I think it's more of a attention thing and want to be cool kind of thing because they feel like they're not progressing with 4s I got a friend with a 6S quad and my 4S quad just kills it, but when it comes to racing it's a different story you're going for efficiency, and you also have a taller battery hanging off the bottom which gives the quad a more pendulum stability effect because the center of gravity is even lower even if the weight is the same so a lot of things change. Technology is moving too fast in the wrong way in my opinion I think they need to protect what they have and stop with the hype,

Great video I really enjoyed it

  4. a tip for when soldering the xt60 connector do 1 and put heat shrink then do the other cable not like you where doing in the video if the last cable you are soldering slipts it can short the lipo and wurste case it will weld it self to the other cable and you with have fire

  5. yeah, there is a torque advantage for sure. build a 1600kv one, it's even better, but not as much thrust obviously. I let a 6s virgin fly my 1600kv and he thought it was so powerful, but really it was the torque he was feeling. I have 1900 and 1600 and i just use them for freestyle. i think i paid $13 for my 1050 pulse batteries! My whole reason for trying 6s on low kv was to extend the life of my batteries, hopefully.

  6. it's funny my vote was just like yours and then eventually changed to no cell limit just like you did. what can i say. i'm resistant to change ! i do think some racers will continue to push setups to barely finish races no matter what the cell limit but that's common to all racing activities. racers always love the bleeding edge of equipment. i do hope to see this move stimulate more good 6 cell equipment for mini quads

  7. Very nice video man!!!
The Ghost its my main racer quad I love it! I’m starting at this so I don’t go that fast, but I wonder if the differences that you are experience are related to the overall weight of your build ? You may want to try a light 4S build and check how it compares. Keep it going man!

  8. the higher the voltage the less IR losses you have. but in order to have higher voltage you need more robust parts. it going to come down to whats the best balance.

  9. So funny that you are talking about this, been thinking of doing a freestyle quad with the same motors you have here and trying to get over 5-7 minutes of varied flying and obviously not racing throttle inputs. It will be interesting to see which directions are taken for the sport and the hobby in general as high KV motors were 2017's darling I wonder if the reverse will be true for 2018? Very interesting to see what will be the pervading trend going forward into the year and the next as well.

  10. quick tip on putting xt60 battery connectors on. Shrink the first connection before you solder the second or you could short the battery if you slip.

  11. our local race club uses small gates and technical courses. because of this all of my builds were heavy indestructable and cheap as i was no where near to maxing out the potential of my build and all i really needed to do was to finish. our season ended and i traveled to another meet that was a different dianamic. huuugee gates long open straighaways and 2min format. sooo much fun, almost nobody crashed if you lost it was because you wernt fast enough or like me heavy quad 1300 i just didnt have the juice to get 6 laps after 5 even if i pass the finish line i couldnt finish the course. Their are many up and down sides to both ways of doing it and this year i really want to travel to other chapters. but will probably stay with 4s and experement with 5 and 6 if i can see the avantage. loved your videos and would love to see more on the subject! most important have fun flying!
