The Strange Story of Unbox Therapy and the LaterCase

Yesterday Lew from Unbox Therapy released the Latercase. This sparked controversy because it looks just like a Pitaka case that Lew had reviewed previously.

  1. Unsubscribed to Unboxed therapy maybe a year ago. It seemed that instead of reviewing the product he was just marketing for the manufacturer.

  2. Unbox Therapy is the Logan Paul of tech YouTube. Even if we cut him some slack for this case case (?) he has posted dozens if not hundreds of paid ads without disclosing it.
I can’t understand his phenomenon. His channel is a TMZ of tech videos.
It’s all about being controversial, hating on Apple (which is a cheap trick to satisfy his Indian audience), zero essence, zero valuable information, zero class.
    Ugh.

  3. I'm using Pitaka and Evutec kevlar cases for years now, first introduced by Philip in Everythingapple pro channel. Pitaka for iPhone and Evutec because that is the company OnePlus uses for its own kevlar cases. But In China you can even buy the same case and print your name on on it with 15$ ! They even have red, blue or grey kevlar, same colors as the Dbrand skins….

  4. I gave him the benefit of a doubt when I first stumbled across the story on Twitter, but that flew outta window when I learned he took down his review of the Pitaka video. I'm thinking he thought people would just go "…hmm this case looks awfully familiar.." and then move on like many people do about cases in general. The wild card that threw off the whole thing is James (the CEO) calling foul and the story getting even more traction. Because to your point, I see tons of cases at 5 And Below and other stores that look like brand cases but no one talks about them because they're made by random Chinese manufacturers. Can't wait to see how this one unfolds

  5. I guarantee its a chinese case… they dont have the same copyright laws we have… just ask the auto industry… so… pitaka, Lew, kentucky Fried chicken… etc. can all make the same case over there ?

  6. My cousin sent me this video for some reason. I'm for a different side of YouTube. And I have to correct you. Youtubers have for a while now, put out products in their "neich". J* has a multi-million $ cosmetic company. James Charles has a pallet. Tati came out with a vitamins line, then a pallet. Throughout the years these influencers have gotten collaboration deals with major companies. Rosanna Pansino has cooking equipment and a cookbook. Lots of other have cookbooks. Lots have written books or hired ghostwriters.

  7. Travis, keep up the great work. Love this channel.

That said, I'm not a big fan of unbox therapy the guy comes off as a tool that doesn't seem to know anything of substance about tech beyond his written script and research clearly done by others. Its like watching a grandparent explain tech. I cringe as he tries to explain technical aspects of the products he is reviewing. If he carbon copy cloned another product to call his own, it wouldn't surprise me at all. It just seems like a douche move to pull a video about a similar/same product with no explanation… beyond the most obvious one.

  8. I did my Pitaka case for a Samsung Galaxy s8+ on August 16, 2017 so you might have to go back a couple more months. This is when we all got our first glimpse of the cases if memory serves me correct.
