WLToys XK X1 Two Axis Gimbal GPS Camera Drone Flight Test Review

This brushless GPS drone includes a 1080p video camera with a two axis gyro stabilized gimbal for steady videos. Find it here http://bit.ly/WL-XK-X1

Pros
– GPS drone with automatic return to home and landing on command, loss of signal. On half battery, the drone will fly back to within 30 meters of its takeoff point. You can continue flying on low battery within this thirty meter circle until the battery is depleted, at which point the drone will land wherever it’s at.
– 1080p video camera with SD card recording to avoid WiFi video freezing and frame dropping. The 1080p video is recorded to the card at 25 fps. 1080p still photos (video frame grabs) are also recorded to the card.
– Also includes a two axis gyro stabilized gimbal for smooth video.
– 7.6V 2200mah battery provides over 14 minutes of flight time (20 minutes if in hover only).
– WL GPS app provides real time viewing capability of the in flight video. It also enables advanced flight control features of circle position, and waypoints. I do not recommend utilizing the apps follow me feature (see cons below).

Cons
– App requires a phone with 802.11ac WiFi capability. Not all phones are capable of 802.11ac WiFi. Before purchasing it is very important to first verify that your phone has this capability. To find out, just Google search your phone’s model name along with the terms “802.11” and “specifications”. Then see if 802.11ac shows up in the results.
– Wide angled lens does have some fisheye effect.
– Advertised with a 4K camera. Actually the drone only saves 4K still photos to your phone. These photos are app software enlargements of the original 1080p frame grab still photos recorded to the card.
– The app is a bit buggy. Particularly, its “follow me” flight control feature may possibly result in fly away and loss of the drone. I do not recommend using the “follow me” feature with this drone.

  1. It still amazes me how they keep copying the Phantom design, despite it being inherently unstable on landing. If i had a dollar for every Phantom or Phantom-wannabe I've seen fall over on landing (or takeoff), I'd be a rich(er) man. ?

  2. I still (occasionally) use my old XK X380, which is far superior to this bird. Too bad they put such a wide angle lens on it, which gives you some severe fish-eye. The 'stills' (pictures) aren't too bad, but from the looks of the way the app performed, it looks like this one could have spent more time in R&D before being released. I think it has a minimal market position, but there will be some who will find this to their liking. After not putting out anything for such a long time, to be honest, this was a bit disappointing from XK Innovations (WLToys). I think they should have upgraded either their V303 or X380 UAVs to have real 2 axis gimbals on them with slider/wheel controls on them, instead of "steps". Another con (imho) is the proprietary battery & charge system. Thanks for the look. Cheers.

  3. Good review Q101. I've had this drone for about 6 months now but haven't had too many chances to take it out as my place is beginning to look like a hangar lol. I've noticed a lot of reviewers have had problems with that 'Follow Me' function so I won't use it. Hope you had a great Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year . Keep the reviews coming and stay safe ?

  4. At least it has brushless motors, as a beginners drone if you can pick it up for around £100 quid then it’s not a bad buy as an introduction to the hobby -any more, and because it only has the one battery and a poor camera I would hang on as I predict this year we are going to see some bargains and package bundling from the toy / hobby manufacturers as they run off existing models.

  5. So I see you got a new replacement lol… Never use the follow me on this drone, I see you had issues with a flyaway and couldn't turn the follow me off flashing man icon either. I revisited this xk x1 on my channel recently after my review and without using those gimmicky app functions it seemed to fly fine.
