The Fagradalsfjall Volcano Revisited With a Thermal Drone Camera

Shot with the thermal drone over the largest crater from the 2021 eruption and it’s possible to see how it has cooled down.

  1. Absolutely stunning thank you watched it erupt from the very beginning back in March 2021 amazing how the landscape has changed from that day

  2. I think for the more abstract shots where you don't have a lot of contrast like these the thermal "window" in the normal camera view is defnitely the coolest!

  3. At 1:30 – I love the differences in surface texture between the two years. Also, at the beginning, am I seeing, at 0:22, iron deposits on the rim? Is that what is "hotter"? A solar effect? So fascinating!

  4. Awesome. I'm interested to see how the area has changed. God I miss seeing it. I hope that area sees another eruption soon, hopefully this year.

  5. I think using the non-grey color schemes works better with human depth perception and most importantly the YouTube video compression.

  7. Each time you use your thermal drone is another step up the learning curve, Gylfi. Some days are definitely going to be better for thermal imaging than the wonderful HD video it also produces.

  8. The thermal image gives so much additional information. Nice to see the crater of 2021 again and the lava field of 2022 shows clearly hotter than the 2021 field. Looking forward to more 😁

  9. Is there an option that the camera can produce a scale of temperature going from say green to white hot that could be added to the side of the video so we can see what temperatures it is measuring to get a good idea of how hot things are?

  10. Great presentation all so the music was great as well was expecting something to jump out was great seeing it again loved watching the volcano every day people sitting on the hills enjoying themselves great work

  11. Thank you, Gylfi. I found your channel in March 2021because of your Fagradalsfjall content. Very glad I subscribed. Looking forward to the next IR footage of that location.

  12. nice to see that you are trying out some color palets i have a tiny handheld FLIR for watching Animals an i found the "White hot" palette worked for me the best to find single sources of heat but then to see the difference of temperature in smaler steps it really depended on the circumstances what worked best.

looking foraward whats to come from that drone 🙂
1 Suggestion: did you try to have a look on the ocean where some under sea volcanes might erupt? or if Kleifarvatn have some warm water spots for instance? uh and i would love to see a glacier through the thermal drone!

  13. If you can slow down the spead, and do more hoving , you will probbably get a better image, also, high vise low image capturing can be more dramatic in the low phase without crashing your drone, practise makes perfect videos

  14. Wonderfull, amazing, beautifull… no words can describe the feelings we have watching this. Nar looks alive again 😉. Many thanks to you 👌👍

  15. hvenær helduru að það verði örrugt að ganga í gíginn? finnst það alltaf mjög freistandi þegar ég sé hann. ekki er hættulegt að ganga í gamla gíga. afhverju ætti þessi að vera öðruvísi?

  16. WOW! They say it will be hot for many years but I'm kind of surprised by how much gas is still coming out of it. I would have never ever guessed that the rim would be hotter than the crater. That seems totally illogical. I'd love to hear some geologist explain that.
BTW, the way you inset the thermal view into the regular shot was some epic editing! 👏👏👏

  17. Thank you for this look at the volcanic landscape. I hope that in a year you will return and do another video so that we can see any changes that may have occurred. 😊

  18. Oh wow that is so neat! So the edges of the cone are still pretty hot in places huh?. I didn't know the fields were still steaming though and wow the last one was really hot still, and stupid people still walk all over it. I'm kind of surprised no one has fallen into a hot spot and been burned yet. Thanks for doing that! Can't wait to see more. This is fascinating to me.

  19. Dark surfaces heat up a lot more in the sun than lighter ones, so to get a better idea of residual heat from the eruption, filming in early morning, especially under heavy overcast might be your best bet. I realize you don't get much darkness in late May, so your result may be better at other times of the year. But don't stop now! I love all your videos!

  20. Fantastic! Just a small comment, is there a way to place the temperature to the colors displayed on video? You have opened up a new world in drone video, congrats!
