  1. As some one who has long covid and permanent lung damage ( since December of 2020 ) your comments are very ablest … Though the O2 sensor is not as accurate as a dedicated monitor it does alert myself and medical team to any significant changes. Without my apple watch 6 I could not push myself to get any of my lung function back. Also as a female it does help predict my menstrual cycles and if I am having thyroid regulation problems. Just because these functions seem minimal to you does not mean many do not use them daily ,and find them extremely helpful. Disabling those features on a whim would change my life and daily expectations drastically.

  2. I think the panel talked about this from a tech perspective alone.

Blood Oxygen sensor, even if we take a 2-5 % error, is still a very important and useful feature to have in any smartwatch.

I have a lot of older patients who wear their smartwatch simply to track their blood oxygen levels, this can help them to seek medical attention when it shows a drastic change ( True for many suffering from COPD, Asthma, ILD, Long COVID).

This rings especially true for people susceptible to Carbon dioxide Narcosis, which can be a fatal complication for a lot of these aforementioned patients.

This coupled with fall detection can actually save lives if set up and tracked accurately by the consumers.

I think people unaware of the larger implications of this technology simply look at this as a gimmick, when its a vital aspect of any health focused smartwatch.

Even for endurance athletes ( For whom ultra was initially targeted), like trekking and climbers, Blood oxygen plays a crucial role in determining the oxygen availability at higher altitudes.

These were the few reasons why I got my parents a smartwatch.

  3. Blood oxygen levels are really important for people with lung issues. If your lungs can’t get enough oxygen to your blood stream , you have a problem.

  4. So how important is the Blood Oxygen sensor, well I read somewhere where checking how much oxygen in one's blood is classed as the fifth most important sign you should check for
in terms of overall health. Now granted you would much rather use a certified blood oxygen sensor, and even though it may not be entirely accurate, it still would give the user an idea on their situation. Like the Heart Rate monitor on the watch and checking your pulse, maybe not as accurate as the real thing, but at least gives you are warning if you should keep on doing what you
are doing or if you have a problem, (i.e seeking medical assistance or seeing a health professional)

  5. I use the oxygen sensor all the time and find it to be as accurate as the fingertip one that I have.

Also the temperature sensor is awesome for measuring bath water for babies. Lol
