  1. 8:05 there is a regulation set that all the teams have to adhere to. There is a default car and all the teams then have to create their car around that based on the rules set by the FIA (the motorsport governing body) . Its not because thats the fastest way. Believe me f1 cars unregulated could be even faster

  2. 8:15 that is not why f1 cars look the same. The FIA provides teams with a vanilla template of a vehicle and within the constraints of the regulations teams will make adjustments to the car. It's not that all the teams discovered the same aerodynamic principles to apply, its just the way the FIA intended the cars to operate. I think that distinction needs to be made clear so people don't assume teams outright copy design concepts from one another.

  3. Marques makes F1 sound much more interesting than it actually is. Well maybe in the past years but now all we do is just watch Max beat everyone else by 30 seconds one race after another.

  4. The idea that it was way louder and visceral it is in person ….if you go back a few years when they were running v10 non-turbo engines it was 2x as intense

  5. F1 cars don't look alike, because they cooy each other, but because they have a regulation on how they can build the cars.
Within that regulation, they can do any modification, that doesn't exceed the regulations.

The reason why the cars look different, than earlier generations, is BECAUSE of the regulations. These are changed every few years. For example, if you look at the V10 cars of the mid 2000s, the back wing was very small, and narrow. Now there's regulations, that allows a very different rear wing. And within the new dimensions, they can modify as they like.

  6. Please don't let him watch drive to survive, garbage television. They artificially made dramas and stuff to make it palatable for people who are not interested in the sport and who doesn't know anything about racing. Being in an online space for motorsport fans after drive to survive is a pain in the ass, one of the few cases where gatekeeping should have been harder.

  7. The Jos Verstappens (Max's dad) extra front wing was banned, because of obvious reasons (visibility) but also one of the teams that did their own version ripped up a pneumatic hose when it screamed out of the pitbox… Usually you can drive under them but the extra wing on the side of the car was to high that it caught up. There have also been a 6-wheeled car and even one that had a huge fan bolted to the back that sucked the car to the floor.. The latter was banned, the former had trouble finding tires (four small tires at the front), and it was also then banned the next season, since then all F1 cars have to have exactly four wheels, no more, no less. That is just F1, teams come up with ingenious solutions, some get incorporated by other teams, some get banned. Merc had an adjustable toe angle one season, to keep front tires warm on a straight.. Just push or pull the steering wheel and front wheels went from negative to positive toe-in.

Suspension members can not create downforce, but they are used to treat the air, guide it in a certain way so it hits the aero elements downstream.

  8. To get a good car engine sound you need several mics that have very high dynamic range, and at least one that is designed to capture infrasonic pulses. Then you need a VERY good sound system that extends to quite low, not necessarily infrasonics but… it needs to go down and have lots of dynamic range. It is not easy, one of the hardest challenges for sound engineer. In the end we still have to make sure it plays well in a laptop so… we cut the low end out, and compress it quite heavily.

  9. I just wanted to add to the explanation on why the cars look the same; F1 determines minimum and maximum requirements (often determined in cm’s or how much something is allowed to bend) for each and every tiny detail of the car. The rules are seriously close in complexity to the laws of a country. Also the system behind it to make sure each and every individual complies.

  10. As an F1 fan, I would LOVE to see a race live one day. Hopefully I’ll be able to go to one in Austin in one of the next upcoming seasons, but man are tickets super pricey. But man, congrats on being able to see 20 of the best drivers in the world doing their thing.

  11. Regarding F1 innovations, although the teams do strive to find innovative ways to tweak the designs, they are severely limited in what they can do since the basic car design is well defined by the FIA's regulations. They can't just toss on a new wing without ensuring that it conforms with the regulations. Multiple instances of this have occurred since the introduction of the new car design a few years ago, including side pod and underfloor geometry controversies.

  12. Correction: McLaren’s second brake pedal allowed the driver to control the rear brakes oof the car independently. Not the left-or-right brakes.
    .
Another tiny correction: The lights didn’t turn green at the start of the race. They went out.

  13. I like this a lot. Marques should show Tech talk to the Team and then they are all hooked. It‘s such a nerdy sport. Love it. ❤
